Family Practice Residency
Program
In
conjunction with the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School
of Medicine, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center offers a university-level,
three year Family Practice Residency Program (FPRP). FPRP residents work
to attain their clinical and academic goals while training with experienced
family physicians in the Family Health Center, a seperately licensed state-of-the-art
facility committed to providing comprehensive family-centered medical
care.
The Family Health Center is affiliated
with PVHMC and is located in a professional building across the street
from the hospital0. The first floor houses a modern medical suite, complete
with the most advanced medical, computer and telecommunications technology
available. Residents maintain a medical practice in this suite and have
their own office space alongside the FPRP faculty in the administrative
suite on the second floor.

Benefits
The residents are Associates of PVHMC and therefore, are entitled to the
comprehensive health, dental, vision, life and disability benefits offered
to PVHMC Associates.
Vacation/CME
Residents have 3 weeks paid vacation per year with one additional week
for special educational conferences.
Health Care Spending Account Option
The health care spending account lets you set aside dollars from your
pay, tax-free, to use for certain kinds of expenses not paid through your
medical, dental or vision plans. The account can also help in budgeting
for out-of-pocket health care expenses in advance.
Meals/Parking
Meals are provided free of charge to residents. Family members are welcome
to join a resident for a meal while they are on-call and will be charged
at the Associate rate.
Parking is provided free of charge
in high security Associate parking lots. Parking at outside facilities
during an elective or required rotation are obtained for the residents
and are free of charge.
Credit Union
Membership is open to all Associates of PVHMC and their immediate family.
In addition to a variety of loan programs, members of the credit union
are eligible for discounts at many amusement parks, car dealerships and
department stores.
Work Hours/On-Call Duty
The residency recognizes that long work hours and excessive on-call responsibilities
are not conducive to an optimal educational environment nor quality patient
care. The goal of the residency is to have the hours residents work reflect
the hours of practicing family physicians.
On average, clinical rotations are
70 hours per week. First year rotations require residents to be on call
l-2 times per week. Faculty physicians assume responsibility for patient
care when a resident is not on-call.
Second and third year residents' call
schedules are arranged in conjunction with faculty. Second and third year
residents can expect to work hours similar to faculty.
Call Rooms
Private, comfortable and secure call rooms inside the hospital are available
for overnight duty.
Resident/Faculty Recruitment
Our residents are integral to the recruitment and selection of each incoming
class. Resident participation is also crucial in the interviewing and
selection of potential faculty.

Department of Academic Affairs
Via oversight by the Residency Director, this department will assist the
residents with their student loan deferments and assist with their licensing
needs.
Academic Affiliation
The residency is affiliated with the UCLA School Of Medicine and has access
to the medical school's educational resources for electives.
Community Medicine
Community Medicine plays a crucial role in the residency curriculum. Residents
have the opportunity to integrate themselves in a variety of settings
such as elementary schools and high school activities.
Through these experiences residents
develop an awareness of the impact of sociocultural factors on patients,
and express respect and tolerance for cultural and social class differences
and their value in a pluralistic society.
Maternal/Child Health
The demographic profile of the Pomona Valley provides an outstanding opportunity
to develop a resident's clinical and research interest in maternal and
child health. The residency faculty also encourages residents to work
closely with the PVHMC perinatologists, FP faculty and resources from
UCLA to enhance their educational interest in maternal/child health outcomes.

THE POMONA COMMUNITY
Pomona, California is a diverse community
of 140,000 nestled 30 miles east of Los Angeles in the Pomona Valley.
Although the city may be best known for hosting one of the world's largest
annual county fairs, Pomona also boasts numerous public parks; roughly
a dozen universities and colleges; thriving art and theater communities;
and nearby skiing, boating, camping and other outdoor activities. The
community provides a culturally rich and diverse environment for medical
residents in Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center's Family Practice Residency
Program.
Geography/Weather
Pomona is located in the heart of Southern California's Inland Empire,
and enjoys relatively mild weather and a diverse geography. The San Bernardino
and San Gabriel mountains - only minutes from Pomona - offer countless

Los Angeles County Fair
Every September, Pomona's 487-acre Fairplex becomes the center of activity
in Southern California as it plays host to the Los Angeles County Fair.
With annual attendance of over 1.6 million, the fair is the largest of
its kind in North America, and one of the largest in the world. Attractions
include grandstand entertainment; thoroughbred racing; a carnival; and
livestock, agriculture, science and art expositions.
Although the LA County Fair is its
biggest attraction, the Fairplex is also host to dozens of national and
international conventions each year. Ongoing expansion - such as a recently
completed 284-space RV lot and the 243-suite Sheraton Suites Hotel - ensures
that the Fairplex will continue to be the region's tradeshow and convention
venue of choice for years to come.
