G.I. LAB DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES
Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center G.I. Lab performs a vital function in the early detection and identification of diseases and abnormalities of the gastro intestinal (G.I.) tract, which includes the esophagus, biliary system, stomach and the small and large intestines. Our Lab offers the latest in state-of-the art medical equipment and technology. The physicians who utilize our Lab are gastroenteriologists and surgeons who have been specially trained. Our highly skilled staff is committed to providing the best care available in the region.

PVHMC has recently become the first and only hospital in the region to use capsule endoscopy, an innovative non-invasive procedure, to diagnose and treat patients with gastrointestinal disorders of the small intestine. With a miniature camera on one end, the PillCam™ SB video capsule enables physicians to visualize for the first time the entire length of the 21-foot-long small intestine. The PillCam™ SB glides down the GI track taking approximately 50,000 images of the small bowel. These images are transmitted to and then stored on a recorder belt worn by the patient for an eight-hour period. Upon completion, the physician views the images using the Given Imaging workstation and RAPID® software to make a diagnosis.

WHAT IS AN ENDOSCOPE?
During endoscopy, a long, narrow, flexible tube called an endoscope is used. This instrument contains a strong light and a microscopic video camera. Your G.I. tract can then be viewed on a video screen.

EXAMS PERFORMED
Upper Endoscopy (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
An endoscope is gently guided down the esophagus into the stomach and small intestine. During the procedure, biopsies may be taken, along with photos, which will help the physician in determining a diagnosis.

Lower Endoscopy (Colonoscopy)

A laxative is given prior to the exam to enable the visualization of the colon. The endoscope is gently passed through the rectum and the entire colon is visualized. During the procedure, photos may be taken along with biopsies (samples) and polyps (growths) removed. These will help the physician in determining a diagnosis.

PRE-PROCEDURE

A nurse will prepare the patient for the procedure by checking vital signs and reviewing medical history/medications. An intravenous (I.V.) will be established to administer a mild sedative for comfort throughout the procedure.

RECOVERY/DISCHARGE
Following the procedure the patient will be closely monitored in our specially equipped recovery room. Prior to the discharge, the nurse will review post procedure instructions (a copy will be sent with the patient) and answer any questions. Transportation arrangements must be made in advance, as patients will not be able to drive themselves home.
