ULTRASOUND

Available through Pomona Valley Medical Center's Department of Radiology since 1974, ultrasound imaging is a painless noninvasive technique for producing moving images of internal processes and structures. Although ultrasound imaging is most often associated with examination of the uterus during pregnancy, the technique is also used to evaluate arteries in stroke patients or to guide physicians as they perform biopsies or for a wide range of other diagnostic and treatment procedures.

Ultrasound imaging involves the use of sound waves that are of a frequency too high for the human ear to detect. When these sound waves are directed at a particular area of the body, different structures beneath the skin reflect the harmless sound waves in different ways. A special sensor placed on the patient's skin detects these sound wave echoes and records the data. A computer then interprets the information and produces a moving image of the internal anatomy.

At PVHMC, our sonographers are experienced professionals, licensed by the American Registry of Diagnostic Sonographers. These skilled specialists provide ultrasound imaging services for a comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment procedures from fetal evaluation to breast cancer detection to biopsy imaging and more.
